Background

Two weeks after John Watson's victory at his home Grand Prix came to an unchanged starting field for the Grand Prix of Germany at Hockenheim.

Tyrrell driver Eddie Cheever graduated this weekend the first Grand Prix use of the new racing car called 011 The team also joined by Michelin - on Avon tires.

Training

The high-speed circuit with the then existing long straights came towards the turbo -powered vehicles, so that Alain Prost was able to qualify in front of his Renault team mate René Arnoux for the pole position. The two Williams drivers Carlos Reutemann and Alan Jones were the second row in front of Didier Pironi and Nelson Piquet, who had not suffered any serious injuries from his accident at Silverstone. Jacques Laffite, Gilles Villeneuve and the two McLaren drivers John Watson and Andrea de Cesaris completed the top ten on the grid.

Race

While Prost successfully defended his top spot after starting first Arnoux lost second place to Reutemann. On the first of the long straights also attracted Pironi past his compatriot. Being in the East Stand ansetzte also Piquet for overtaking, the two cars touched. Here, the right rear tire was damaged by Arnoux, so that he had at the end of the first round go to the box. Meanwhile, Piquet was overtaken by Laffite and Jones.

After he had passed his teammate Reutemann in the fifth round to Jones dueled with Prost for the lead, he could finally win in round 21 for themselves. Piquet, the duel had previously supplemented briefly to a three-way battle, but was dropped because of problems with his tires in the 15th round back behind Reutemann.

The failure Reute 's due to an engine failure on lap 28 brought Héctor Rebaque and Eddie Cheever in the points.

When it started to rain lightly after about two -thirds of the race distance, the Brabham BT49 at the Renault RE30 proved slippery conditions as superior. Piquet was thus able to pass on lap 37 at Prost. As Jones fell back and finally had to make a pit stop due to misfiring, the Brazilians took the lead and defended it to the finish.
