Qualification for Soccer World Cup 1986
For the World Cup tournament in Mexico in 1986, a total of 121 organizations had reported, including
- 33 teams from Europe (with the holders Italy )
- 29 teams from Africa ( three teams withdrew )
- 27 teams from Asia (excluding Israel and Taiwan)
- 10 teams from South America
- 18 teams from North and Central America ( with host Mexico)
- 4 teams from Oceania ( with Israel and Taiwan)
Qualified Teams
As defending champion Italy and Mexico were directly qualified organizers and the World Cup was held with 24 teams were available for the remaining 119 teams 22 free finals spaces are available; went away
Since Jamaica, Grenada, Barbados, Oman, Lesotho, Niger and Togo withdrew, and Iran was ruled to 111 teams participating in the qualification - new World Cup record. Furthermore, Lebanon came in the qualifying campaign after four significant defeats his team back.
European Zone / UEFA
32 teams played in three groups of four and four groups of five. All seven group winners and the four runners-up of the five groups were directly qualified for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. South American zone / CONMEBOL
10 teams played in a four- group and in two groups of three. The three Gruppenspieger were qualified directly for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. The three runners-up and the third group of the group of four found in two knockout rounds of the fourth World Cup finalists.

North, Central American and Caribbean Zone / CONCACAF
The winners of the first round of the playoffs qualified for the Second Round. Guatemala had a bye, three other teams attracted due to the abandonment of their opponents without a fight in the second round. The second round was played in three groups of three, the three group winners contested the CONCACAF finals. The winner of the CONCACAF final round qualifying for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Asian Zone / AFC
West Asia and East Asia each had a World Cup finalists. In both regional blocs ever four Groups. The group winners qualified for the semi-finals. In two knockout rounds then the World Cup finalists were determined. Due to the first Gulf war, the warring states Iran and Iraq should their home games on neutral courts unsubscribe. African Zone / CAF
29 African teams were playing for a place in the finals. Four rounds were played in KO system. The winners of both final round games qualified for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

1 Madagascar without a fight on, because Lesotho has withdrawn. 2 Libya without a fight on, because Niger has withdrawn. 3 Guinea without a fight further, as Togo has withdrawn.

Oceanic zone / OFC
From OFC took only Australia and New Zealand participated in the World Cup qualifiers. These were joined by Taiwan and Israel, which have been assigned for political motives of the Oceania group. The four teams played in a round robin with round-trip games from the Oceania winner. The Oceania winner then had to compete in a playoff against a group runners from one of the three European groups of four. The winner of this playoff qualifying for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
