Background

The same driver who had two weeks earlier contested the Grand Prix of Germany, competed in Hungary for the tenth World Championship race of the year.

The sponsor Camel announced its intention to no longer support the team Lotus, but Williams and Benetton from 1991.

Training

For the only time in the season, no qualified McLaren or Ferrari driver for the pole position, but Thierry Boutsen in Williams FW13B, which was also flanked in the front row by teammate Riccardo Patrese. Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna, the new Goodyear tires tried, followed before Nigel Mansell and Jean Alesi.

Race

Shortly after the start Patrese was overtaken by Berger, Senna, Mansell and Alesi. They were followed by Andrea de Cesaris, Alessandro Nannini, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost.
