At its rise David Moncoutie attacked out of a five-man breakaway group and let his companion Sébastien Joly, Christophe Kern, Juan Manuel Garate and Nikita are Jeskow. This breakaway group formed after 36 kilometers. The favorites for overall victory waited until the last climb and were lead by Andreas Klöden at high speed into the mountain. Here it came again and again to attacks, especially by Alberto Contador. This sat down with Alejandro Valverde from and Igor Antón something from others. The trio had to the other favorites in the target but only a lead of five seconds. Winner of the day was David Moncoutie who escaped 34 seconds in front of the best climbers to the finish.
