2008 Vuelta a España, Stage 1 to Stage 11#Stage 8
The 8th stage of the Vuelta a España 2008 on September 7, led about 151 km from Andorra ( Escaldes - Engordany ) to Salardú / Naut Aran / Pla de Beret. Here were two intermediate sprints and a mountain stage of the second category, and three of the first category on the program.
With the stage is the "roof of the Vuelta " has been reached: The 2070 meter high Puerto de la Bonaigua was the penultimate mountain in the present day section. At its rise David Moncoutie attacked out of a five-man breakaway group and let his companion Sébastien Joly, Christophe Kern, Juan Manuel Garate and Nikita are Jeskow. This breakaway group formed after 36 kilometers. The favorites for overall victory waited until the last climb and were lead by Andreas Klöden at high speed into the mountain. Here it came again and again to attacks, especially by Alberto Contador. This sat down with Alejandro Valverde from and Igor Antón something from others. The trio had to the other favorites in the target but only a lead of five seconds. Winner of the day was David Moncoutie who escaped 34 seconds in front of the best climbers to the finish. Since the previous day's winner and winner of the Golden Jerseys Alessandro Ballan already on the penultimate climb had problems, he could not defend his leader's jersey. So again took Levi Leipheimer the Golden jersey.
