2009 Australian Grand Prix

The Australian Grand Prix 2009 took place on 29 March at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne instead and was the first race of the Formula 1 2009 season. Winner was Jenson Button ( Brawn -Mercedes) before Rubens Barrichello ( Brawn -Mercedes) and Jarno Trulli (Toyota).

Background

The start of the season was the latest since the 1988 Formula 1 season.

The start time has been moved from 15:30 to 17 clock AEDT. This was done in order to offer the European audience a better airtime (6 clock UTC).

Jarno Trulli denied the Grand Prix of Australia its 200th Grand Prix.

With Giancarlo Fisichella, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton ( once each ) were four former winners of this Grand Prix.

At the Australian Grand Prix gave Sébastien Buemi and Brawn GP, the successor team of Honda, their debut.

Training

The first fastest time of the year, Williams driver Nico Rosberg secured ahead of his teammate Kazuki Nakajima and Kimi Raikkonen. In the second session Rosberg was again the fastest rider in the field. In second and third place followed by Rubens Barrichello and Trulli. In the third free practice session Rosberg drove the fastest lap and thus generated in each training section, the best time. This time occupied Trulli and Jenson Button, the places behind him.

Qualification

In the first qualifying segment dominated the race cars of the new Brawn team. Barrichello set the fastest time ahead of Jenson Button. The Force India and Toro Rosso drivers and Nelson Piquet junior from left. In the second qualifying section were the two Brawn, led by Barrichello, again at the top of the field. The McLaren drivers, Nakajima, Alonso and Heidfeld did not make the jump into the third section. This was again dominated by two Brawn drivers, of which button the pole position in 1:26,202 min before Barrichello and Sebastian Vettel secured.

Race

1 Since the rear-wing of Toyota drivers Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli were classified as illegal, they were demoted to the back of the grid. At Toyota, however, they decided on a start from the pit lane.
