53rd Berlin International Film Festival

The 53rd International Film Festival Berlin 2003 took place between February 16, 2003 February 6.

The festival was opened with the glamorous musical Chicago. However, the film was in competition out of competition. For the first time promoted the Berlinale international film talent. The newly established Berlinale Talent Campus was an established institution in the coming years. There were panel discussions and workshops here. Campus talents presented their films in the official program of the Berlinale in the next few years.

Section competition

In the official competition program, the following films presented the findings of the international jury:

International Jury

Jury President this year's Berlinale was Canadian director Atom Egoyan. Under his leadership members of the jury selected the winners from: Humbert Balsan (France), Kathryn Bigelow (USA ), Anna Galiena (Italy ), Martina Gedeck ( Germany ), Geoffrey Gilmore (USA), Abderrahmane Sissako (Mauritania).

Award winners

  • Golden Bear for the film In This World by Michael Winterbottom
  • Silver Bears in the following categories: Grand Jury Prize: Spike Jonze for the film adaptation.
  • Best Director: Patrice Chéreau for his brother
  • Best Actress: the three main actress of the movie The Hours, Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep
  • Best Actor: Sam Rockwell in Confessions - Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
  • For an outstanding artistic contribution: Li Yang as a screenwriter and director of the film Blind Shaft
  • Best Original Score: Majoly, Serge Fiori and Mamadou Diabaté Madame for Senegalese film Brouette

More prices:

  • The Blue Angels for the best European film in the competition received Wolfgang Becker for Good Bye, Lenin!
  • The Alfred Bauer Prize in memory of the founder of the festival was Zhang Yimou for the director of Hero.
  • FIPRESCI (Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique ) - the independent film award in the international film critics and film journalists association for the best film in the competition received lights.

  • Submissive - Director: Igor Zaritzk
  • Broken Wings - Director: Nir Bergman - was awarded the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and the price of the Association of International Film Arts Theatre and Audience Prize
  • Yossi & Jagger - Director: Eytan Fox
  • Flower & Garnett - Director: Keith Behrman
  • Owning Mahowny - Director: Richard Kwietniowski ( with Philip Seymour Hoffman in the lead role )
  • Wolfsburg - Director: Christian Petzold won the FIPRESCI Prize
  • Pure - Director: Gillies MacKinnon
  • Thousand Clouds of Peace besiege the sky, love, you will never cease to be love - Director: Julian Hernandez - received the " Teddy Award".

Honorary Golden Bear

The Golden Ehrenbär for his life's work was the French actress Anouk Aimée.

Children's Film Festival

On the Children's Film Festival the following films were awarded:

  • Crystal Bear - awarded by the Children's Jury: Elina - Director: Klaus Härö

Retrospective

This year's retrospective was dedicated to the work of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau.
