Ahmed Abdullah

Ahmed Abdullah (actually Leroy Bland, born May 10, 1947 in New York City ) is an American jazz trumpeter.

Life and work

Ahmed Abdullah began playing the trumpet at the age of thirteen under the influence of the music of Louis Armstrong and initially worked with local rhythm and blues bands. Mid-1960s, he turned to the free jazz movement; in the 1970s he was in the New York Loftszene known ( Wildflowers Loft Sessions, 1976) and played in 1976 and again in 1990 in the Sun Ra Arkestra. Since then he has worked Others with Ed Blackwell, Arthur Blythe, Machali Favors, Billy Bang, Chico Freeman, Ronnie Boykins, Charles Brackeen, Steve Reid, John Hicks, Sam Rivers and Marion Brown. Abdullah led his Solomonic Quintet and formations such as Abdullah 's Life Force, NAM and Ebonic Tones and took several albums for the label About Time, Silkheart, CIMP and Cadence Jazz on where and Others Charles Brackeen, Vincent Chancey, Jay Hoggard, Charles Moffett, Fred Hopkins, Carlos Ward and David S. Ware participated. Inspired by the birth of his daughter on the day after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, he took in May 2004 with Billy Bang, the baritone saxophonist Alex Harding, bassist Alex Blake and drummer Andre Stobert the acclaimed album Tara's song, with compositions by Sun Ra ( " Tapestry ", "Late in a Pleasant Mood" ), Gigi Gryce ( " Sans Souci " ) and a long version of his own composition, " The Cave". 2013 he worked with Charles Burnham, Reggie Nicholson and DD Jackson.

Ahmed Abdullah taught at the New School University of New York.
