Airto Moreira

Airto Moreira Guimorvan (* August 5, 1941 in Itaiópolis, Brazil) is a Brazilian jazz percussionist.

Airto Moreira grew up in Curitiba and São Paulo. In 1966 he was a member of the Trio Novo, accompanied among others Geraldo Vandré. In 1967 Hermeto Pascoal came about, it became the Quarteto Novo. In 1968 he moved for political reasons (Brazil had a military dictatorship since 1964 ) with his wife, singer Flora Purim, in the United States.

Moreira played in New York with some jazz musicians. One of them, Joe Zawinul, introduced him to Miles Davis. Moreira had then participate in the sessions for his album Bitches Brew and played in 1970 and also performed live for the beginning of 1971 in the Davis band in the album Black Beauty: Miles Davis at Fillmore West. Subsequently, he was one of Zawinul's Weather Report and Chick Corea group Return to Forever. He also participated in music recordings by Gato Barbieri, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana, Mickey Hart and Billy Cobham. Together with his wife Flora Purim it makes since that time, especially their own formations, since 1990 the band "Fourth World" with José Neto and Gary Meek.

His service to others is that in 1972 the prestigious music magazine Down Beat introduced the new category percussion. She sat down by internationally as a designation for this time strongly influenced by Moreira use of smaller percussion instruments.
