Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge

The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge ( AMNWR ) is a 13,832 km ² large nature reserve, which includes about 2,500 islands, bays and reefs along the coast of the U.S. state of Alaska. It extends from Cape Lisburne in the northwest of the Lisburne Peninsula to the south of Iceland Forrester Alaska Panhandle and includes, among other things, the coast of the Alaska Peninsula, the Kodiak Archipelago, the Pribilof Islands and the Aleutian Islands.

History

The Alaska Maritime Refuge existed in its present form, as with the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act eleven existing protected areas were grouped together with other regions to a large protected area since 1980. The origins go back to the beginning of the 20th century, when the National Wildlife Refuge System was created under Theodore Roosevelt.

Wildlife

Approximately 75 % of native seabirds live in Alaska AMNWR. Estimated 40 million seabirds, 80 % of the North American Seevogelbestands, nesting in this region. Also, sea lions, seals, walruses and sea otters are found in the waters of Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.
