Alzira, Valencia

Alzira (Spanish Alcira ) is a ostspanische city in the province of Valencia. The municipality is situated on the River Júcar.

History

Is unsecured, if the city is to be equated with the established Iberian tribe of Conte Stani settlement Saetabicula. Alzira was founded as Al- Yazirat Suquar ( Júcar island) of Arabs in the Middle Ages it was a flourishing Moorish trading station. In 1242 the city was conquered by James I ( Aragón ) ( 1208-1276 ) and brought under Spanish control. In the years 1472, 1590, 1864, 1916, 1982 and 1987, the city was victim of flooding.

Economy

Even into the 20th century Alzira was surrounded with palm trees and mulberry groves and in the humid lowlands rice was grown. Meanwhile, the city is an important industrial center (paper and chemistry) and the population lives especially from the Orange cultivation.

Attractions

The old town of Alzira was classified in 2004 as Conjunto histórico - artístico.
