An American in Paris (film)

An American in Paris is an American musical film directed by Vincente Minnelli from the year 1951. The film had on 26 August 1951 in London Premiere.

Action

The young American soldier Jerry Mulligan remains after the end of World War II in Paris to become a painter there. He falls in love with the pretty perfume saleswoman Lise, which is, however, a relationship with the acclaimed singer Henri Baurel. To get at least halfway ends meet financially, Jerry gives in to the rich American Milo.

When Jerry and Lise take on a costume party leave of each other, the conversation is overheard by Baurel, who then gives up his claim to Lise.

Music, dance

The production is characterized in particular by developed by Gene Kelly choreographed the dance and ballet interludes.

The music is mainly by George Gershwin, whose tone poem An American in Paris, the film was the title, and the caricatured by Oscar Levant in the role of Jerry's friend Adam as aspiring after his magnum opus composer.
