Ooijer began as a child in Amsterdam's smaller clubs before he was discovered in 1986 by the Scouts of AFC Ajax. After his youth, he did, however, difficult to reconcile with the transition to the first team and was therefore loaned in 1994 to League rival FC Volendam.
