Andrew Cassels

Andrew Cassels ( born July 23, 1969 in Bramalea, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player and current coach, who during his active career, 1986-2006, among other things for the Montreal Canadiens, Hartford Whalers, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals played in the National Hockey League on the position of the center. Since summer 2011 he has worked as an assistant coach with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL.

Career

Cassels began his career in 1984 in his native city at the Bramalea Blues, before he spent 1986 to 1989 for the Ottawa 67 's in the Ontario Hockey League a successful time. Although he was able to win with the 67 's no title, but he has received numerous awards. In 1987 he was awarded the Emms Family Award as Best Newcomer League, in the following year he was awarded the William Hanley Trophy as sporty fairest player, the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy as top scorer and the Red Tilson Trophy as most valuable player. In addition, he was appointed to the First All -Star team the OHL, as in the following year.

After the striker had already been selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1987 in the first round to 17th position of the Montreal Canadiens, Cassels joined in the summer of 1989 to the Canadiens turned professional. This put him in his first season first in their farm team, the Sherbrooke Canadiens of the American Hockey League one, so that the center had only a few appearances in the National Hockey League. In the season 1990/91, the center forward was fixed to the cadres of the Montreal Canadiens. However, the paths of the two parties separated in September 1991, after the striker had only managed six goals in his first NHL season. The Whalers Cassels spent six years and has always been one of the best scorers in the team. Time in Hartford ended with the relocation of the Whalers to North Carolina and renamed Carolina Hurricanes. However, before a game for the Hurricanes played, gave him the management in August 1997, together with Jean -Sébastien Giguère goalkeeper for Gary Roberts and Trevor Kidd of the Calgary Flames from. Since summer 2011 he has worked as an assistant coach with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL under head coach Jarrod skald.

Internationally

Cassels represented his native Canada at the Junior World Cup in 1989 and the World Cup 1996. During the World Youth Championship in 1989, the Canadian team was fourth. At the World Championships 1996 he won the silver medal.
