History

With the conversion of the First Class in the League A in season 1949/50, which was first conceived again as a professional league since the war ended, there was also a change in the classification in amateur football. While the central and eastern Austrian football clubs ( Burgenland, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria and Vienna) were playing in the national leagues, from which ascended masters, either directly or through play-offs in the professional league B, the clubs of the Western countries did not participate in the League B part. The second-rate teams from Carinthia and Salzburg played in 1949 /50, the newly founded Tauern League and the 1955/56 season to season 1958/59 in the Tauern League South for Carinthia and Salzburg Tauern League North. There was also the season of 1950/51 season to 1959/60 for the clubs of Tyrol and Vorarlberg, the Arlberg league. These leagues have the second game levels - be regarded as their champion in direct duels played for the promotion to the Football League A - in addition to the B league.

In the 1959/60 season it came to the introduction of the regional leagues east and center and the year after the introduction of the Regionalliga West. The Regional counted until the 1973/74 season as the second- highest league in Austria. The respective champions were allowed to ascend directly into the major league.

In the season 1974/75, there was the introduction of the first and second division with 10 clubs and the dissolution of the regional leagues west and center. To move up to the second Bundesliga played the master of the country leagues from Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Carinthia, Upper Austria and Styria, had to complete the play-offs; the master of the Regional League East could ascend directly. In 1977/ 78, the provinces of Salzburg and Tyrol off their national league league before the Alps as the third stage.

In the season 1980/81 Regional League West including Vorarlberg was reinstalled as the third division. The Regional League East, however, was from 1980/81 bis 1983/84 not played and only 1984/85 reintroduced. Until the 1995/96 season, the champion of the regional leagues east and west direct climb right into the second Bundesliga had. The Regional center on the other hand is played back only since the 1994/95 season. The champion of the national associations of Upper Austria, Carinthia ( with East Tyrol) and Styria played in relegation matches the climbers from the second division.

Between 1996/ 97 and 2003/ 04 is that the three masters of the regional leagues with the penultimate of the First League, the second division of Austria, Relegation games perform two promotion places. After an increase in the First League from the 2005/06 season to twelve teams had been decided (because of denied license, however, was initially continued to play with ten clubs and until the following season actually increased to twelve clubs), the winners of the regional leagues were again ascend directly. Since the 2009/10 season play-offs of the three regional leagues and the Ninth of the First League will be played again, since this was reduced to ten teams from the 2010/11 season. For the 2014/15 season all three Regional champions to ascend directly into the First League after a decision by the OFB Bureau again.
