Axat

Axat is a commune with 624 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Aude department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It is the capital of the eponymous canton and municipal association formed therefrom Communauté de communes du Canton d' Axat.

Geography

Axat lies in the west of the department in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the north of the Sault on the upper reaches of the Aude, 49 kilometers southwest of Carcassonne, about 40 kilometers north of the Spanish border and 28 kilometers south of Limoux, between the neighboring communities Artigues in the southwest, Saint -Martin- Lys in the north and in the east Puilaurens. The village is situated in a basin surrounded by wooded mountains.

Attractions

The church Nouvelle Eglise de l' Assomption ( " New Church of the Virgin Mary into heaven " ) was built in 1630. In the church there are two painted wooden statues from the 17th century, a represents the Evangelist John, the other being the Virgin Mary. Both were classified as a monument historique in 1965 ( historical monument ). In addition, two paintings are from the 18th century in the church. One painting depicts the Archangel Michael is who defeats the devil, the other represents the Virgin Mary into heaven represents the paintings have been classified as a monument historique in 1980. Near the church, the ruins of the castle of Axat standing on a crag. The castle belonged to the then Seigneur of Axat, Raymond de Dax, who built the church. The bridge over the Aude is also from the 17th century.

Economy

The Aude is a raging torrent in Axat and is used for trout fishing and water sports.

Axat is situated on the D118 the north of the town meets the D117.

In 1900 the railway line was Carcassonne - Perpignan furnished. In Axat the Viaduct Viaduc of the canal was built, which leads with nine arches over the Aude.
