Lapradelle-Puilaurens

Puilaurens is a commune with 263 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Aude department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It belongs administratively to the Arrondissement Limoux and Canton Axat.

Geography

The municipality is situated approximately 60 kilometers west of Perpignan and 45 km south of Carcassonne on the border to the neighboring department of Pyrénées- Orientales. Neighboring communities of Puilaurens are:

  • Saint- Julia -de- Bec in the north,
  • Saint -Louis- et- Parahou in the Northeast,
  • Candies -de- Fenouillèdes in the east,
  • Fenouillet and Gincla in the southeast,
  • Salvezines in the south,
  • Axat in the west and
  • Saint -Martin- Lys and Belvianes- et- Cavirac in the northwest.

The municipal area extends north and south of the main valley, the east through the Fenouillèdes, a former comarca of Northern Catalonia, runs. The river Boulzane ended here its coming from the south headwaters and also swings to the east.

There are three major settlements: The place Puilaurens itself is the historic center, which was created for strategic reasons in the southern hilly region below the castle Puilaurens. Lapradelle is a modern settlement, which is located directly in the main valley and the municipality is home, the place Lavagnac is located on the northern side of the valley. The municipality is also called like Lapradelle - Puilaurens, although this is not the official name.

Transport links

The municipality is mainly supplied by the department D117 road that leads from Perpignan to Quillan. In the same relation also a railway line, which today has however only more important for tourism and already behind Axat, ends at the gorge of Saint -Martin- Lys runs.
