Belcaire

Belcaire is a municipality with 457 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in France. It is situated in the Aude department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region.

Geography

Belcaire is the capital of the Pays de Sault. He on a plateau of the Pyrenees in an average altitude of 1000 meters on the road D 613 from Ax- les -Thermes to Narbonne. The town is located 56 km southeast of Limoux in Limoux arrondissement.

Neighboring municipalities are (from north clockwise) Fougax -et -Barrineuf, Roquefeuil, Niort -de -Sault, Comus and Comus.

History

The name Belcaire goes back to the name of the former castle Bellicadum from the early 13th century. The place was formerly the seat of the royal administration of the Sault region.

Culture and sights

  • The church from the 17th century with a colorful framed statue of the Virgin Mary dates from the 16th century.
  • From the castle from the 13th century exist only remains, as it was destroyed as a Cathar.
  • The Manoir de Belcaire, a mansion from the 16th century, is classified as a monument historique. Today, the hotel is housed.
