Baldingen ( in local dialect: [ b̥ɑldig̊ə ] ) is a municipality in the district of the Swiss canton of Aargau Zurzach. It is located about two kilometers south of the border with Germany.

Geography

The municipality consists of two districts: (. 559 m asl ) Upper Baldingen located at the top of the Spornegg, a semi-circular hill in the Tabular Jura. Under Baldingen (460 m above sea level. M. ) lies further down the eastern slope of the hill. The development of both districts have grown together only a few years. South of the Spornegg extends the vast, flat Güllenhau Plateau. This falls in the southwest steeply into the valley of the Schlieren Bach. East of sub Baldingen is up to 80 meters deep gorge of Chrüzlibachs which opens at Rekingen into the Rhine.

The area of the municipality is 282 hectares, of which 88 hectares are forested and built over 32 hectares. The highest point is 575 meters on the Güllenhau Plateau, the deepest at 400 meters in the canyon of Chrüzlibachs.

Neighboring municipalities are Rekingen in the north, Böbikon in the east, in the southeast Lengnau, Endingen in the south and Tegerfelden in the West.

History

The first written mention of safe Baldingen took place in 1317 ( Heini of Baldingen ); older evidence of the name probably refers to all other places. It is a derivation with the common in early medieval settlements Alemanni suffix - ing- (un) and means for the people of Baldo. Baldingen was the seat of a Ministerialengeschlechts, whose small castle but no traces are preserved. The high court were those of the Habsburgs.

The Confederates conquered the Aargau in 1415 and Baldingen now belonged to the Official Unterehrendingen in the county of Baden, a commons regime. In March 1798, the French conquered Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic. Baldingen became a municipality in the canton of Baden short-lived, since 1803 it belongs to the canton of Aargau.

In the second half of the 19th century Baldingen had the largest population decline in all Aargau communities. Almost half of the residents left their homeland, not a few migrated from overseas. By 1883 Baldingen was part of the parish Zurzach and forms since then along with Böbikon own parish. After a long period of stagnation and a renewed sharp decline in the 1970s, the population is increasing again.

Attractions

In sub Baldingen is the 1898 built Catholic parish church of St. Agatha. It is built in the Gothic Revival style and has some Art Nouveau elements. The church was built according to the plans of the architect Karl Moser, the builder of the Zurich Kunsthaus and St. Paul's Church in Basel.

Coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms is: " Azure, three yellow linden leaves with yellow stem and branch. " This coat of arms, which is in use since 1953, goes back to the family coat of arms of Franz Zweyer of Evebach. This had been in Klingnau Obervogt of the Bishop of Constance and had settled in 1667 Baldingen, where he ordered to build a small castle.

On December 31, 2013 274 people lived in Baldingen, the proportion of foreigners was 8%. At the 2000 census, 48.6 % Roman Catholic, and 30.1% were reformed. 98.0 % identified German as their main language.

Traffic

Although the village is located away from the traffic, but the main road 7 between Basel and Winterthur, just two kilometers away. A narrow side road leads to Lengnau in Surbtal. A bus company operates from regional bus Zurzach Zurzach on Baldingen after Böbikon.

Education

The community has a primary school, while the kindergarten in the neighboring municipality Böbikon is performed. The secondary can be visited in Rekingen, the secondary school and the district school in Zurzach. The nearest Canton schools ( high schools ) are located in Baden and betting rings.
