Rietheim, Aargau

Rietheim (Swiss German: riətə ) is a municipality in the district of the Swiss canton of Aargau Zurzach. It is located on the High Rhine on the border with Germany.

Geography

The village is located approximately one and a half kilometers south- west of the Rhine at the foot of the steep northeast flank of the mountain Achen, part of the Jura mountains. To the south stretches a deep valley, which reaches almost to the high level of Achen mountain. The Rhine makes a wide arc around the village. In between lies the flat Rietheimer field which has numerous reductions in several places, caused by salt mining in the first half of the 20th century. To the north is the former island Grien. The Rhine had here earlier a second branch of the river, which is now silted up to a Altwasserlauf, under the Auenrenaturierungsbemühungen the canton, however, is to be reopened. Neighboring municipalities are the German Kuessaberg in the north, Zurzach the east and south, Klingnau in the southwest and Koblenz in the west.

History

The first mention of reed home was on December 26, 1239th Count Heinrich von Kuessaberg and Lütold the Elder of Regenberg then sealed a contract, as a witness was an Cuonradus de Riet home.
