The kingdom of Balhae, or called ( in Chinese reading) Bohai was a Tungus - Sino- Korean kingdom in southeastern Manchuria and the northern tip of present-day North Korea. There was 669-926, had a bureaucracy in the Chinese style and supposedly five major capital cities. His research is still in its infancy.

The kingdom of Balhae was founded by Tae Choyŏng (Da Zuorong ), a former Goguryeo General called 669 in cooperation with the Tungusic Malgal, also Mohe.

When the proto- Mongolian Kitan the border Tang China invaded and isolated the local Tang administration, he rebelled and fled with his people to the river Sungari in today's Jilin, where he proclaimed himself king. 712 the Kingdom of Tang China was recognized for safety's sake Tae Choyong also known as kök -Turkish vassal.

His people was made up of three groups: the Sumo Mohe, the Chinese influences were subject and the royal house brought forth, then from the " remaining " Mohe (Mo -ho, also Malgal ), descendants of the Tungus, were regarded as relatively primitive, and the majority presented, and thirdly, the Koreans, who came from the old Goguryeo. The importance of groups in the state is controversial for the purpose of political utilization of the story.

Tae Choyŏng died 719 was succeeded by his son Tae Muye (Da Wuyi, † 737 ), which rose to its own rulers title. During his reign there was strife between the pro-and anti-Chinese faction at court. His younger brother Tae Munye rebelled when he should be sent to the Mohe - groups along the Amur. He had been a long time as a hostage in the imperial court and the Tang felt obligated. The result was a war with China, with the king Tae Muye even 732 sent a fleet to Shandong. Only 735 agreement was reached again.

The third king, Tae Hŭngmu (Da Jinmao, † 793 ) reigned for 57 years. Under his rule, Chinese became the lingua franca in Balhae. He copied the institutions and literature Tang China, paid formal tribute to China and was awarded his title from there. His ambassadors were always present at the New Year's receptions at the Tang court. The boundaries of the Balhae Empire were extended up to the Amur and on the Liaodong Peninsula.

Balhae was captured 926 of the neighboring Khitan. However, its inhabitants still had until the 13th century a certain special status. Many Koreans returned to Korea back to the Goryeo Kingdom at that time emerging.
