Banton (Romblon)

Banton is a Philippine municipality in the province of Romblon in the Administrative Region IV -B, Mimaropa. It has 5963 inhabitants ( census May 1, 2010 ) living in 17 barangays. It is classified as a community of the fifth income class in the Philippines and as a partially urbanized.

Banton is located in the north of the province on a small island group comprising the islands of La Carlota, Isabela and Bantoncillo. The islands are of volcanic origin. Their topography is characterized by flat undulating terrain.

In Banton explored in 1936 by a team of anthropologists from the University of the Philippines Manila, the unusual burial rites on the island. The island population buried only the heads of the dead that were previously laid out and skeletonized in small groups in wooden coffins on cliffs in the Guyangan Cave. Were also examined the intricately woven fabrics, in which the coffins were wrapped. Age determination showed that this burial method was used from the 12th to the 14th century from the island population. Examples of this type of burial can be seen in the museum of the Philippines in Manila.
