Barney McAll

Barney McAll (born 1966 in Melbourne) is an Australian jazz pianist, keyboardist and composer.

Life and work

Barney McAlls father was a fan of the Traditional Jazz; his brother introduced him to modern jazz of Bud Powell and Bill Evans. In the jazz scene of Melbourne he was active from the mid-1980s; from 1986 he played with Vince Jones ( It All Ends Up In Tears (1987) and Trustworthy Little Sweethearts, 1988). The Bachelor of Music degree he earned at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, where he studied with Paul Grabowsky, Tony Gould, Mike Nock and Doug Devries. In the United States McAll worked with Vincent Herring, who encouraged him to compose. In 1990, he won the AMP Jazz Piano Award at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz; with the prize money, he studied in New York. In the 1990s, he worked again with Vince Jones in the U.S. with the Groove Collective, and with Gary Bartz, Fred Wesley, Dewey Redman and Cindy Blackman. In 1995 he released his debut album Exit, at the Vincent Herring and Jimmy Cobb participated. In 2001 he released the Day; In 2003 he participated in Josh Roseman's album Treats for the Nightwalker. His album Mother of Dreams and Secrets, he recorded with various bands in Cuba, Australia and New York, including with Liberty Ellman, Billy Harper and Kurt Rosenwinkel. Furthermore McAll film music composer at several television documentaries, including the series Independent Lens.
