Belmont-Luthézieu

Belmont- Luthézieu is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Belmont- Luthézieu located at 450 meters above sea level. Level, about 14 kilometers north of the town of Belley (air line). The double municipality extends in the southeastern Bugey, a scenic location on the eastern slope of the Forêt du Fays, a ridge in the French Jura, above the valley of Séran, at the southern entrance to the valley of the Valromey.

History

The territory of Belmont- Luthézieu was already inhabited in prehistoric times. In 1110 the priory of Saint- Claude was founded in Belmont. Since the 12th century Luthézieu formed a parish. Both villages were in the Middle Ages under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy, and came with the Treaty of Lyon in 1601 to France. On November 1, 1974, the previously independent municipalities of Belmont and Luthézieu merged to today's double municipality.

Attractions

The Parish Church of Belmont originated in the 12th century, but has since then been restored and redecorated, especially during the 17th and 18th centuries.
