Bennwil

Bennwil (Basel German: Bämbel ) is a municipality in the district of Waldenburg in the canton of Basel -Country in Switzerland.

Geography

Bennwil situated on 515 m asl in a valley between the Waldenburgertal and the Diegtertal in the southeast of Canton. Its neighboring municipalities are Hölstein, Lower Village, Upper Village, Long Bruck, Eptingen and Diegten.

Coat of arms

A silver, nimbiertes Agnus Dei on a blue ground, with the left front foot shouldered the flag of victory holding: On golden, above expiring in a cross, a silver rod, terminating in two lobes banner with red cross. The coat of arms is reminiscent of the former relationship to the monastery Schonthal.

History

The village was founded in the 8th century by the Alemanni. 1189, the village was first mentioned as Bendewilere and paid by Count Hermann II of Frohnburg the Benedictine monastery Schoental Lange Bruck. When the monastery was abolished in 1528, the village became part of Basel. On April 29, 1617 Church, 8 houses and two barns burned to the ground and walls were rebuilt.

Economy

Agriculture is still the main pillar of this community, and thanks to its unspoiled state, it is also in a popular hiking area.

Traffic

The community is accessible from the Waldenburgerbahn Hölstein and the train station with a half-hourly Postbus through Gürblental.
