Berlin is a city on the Androscoggin River in Coos County in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. Berlin was founded in 1829 and has 10331 inhabitants (as of 2000). The city is also referred to as "The City did Trees Built".

History

The settlement rights in 1771 awarded. The name should Maynesborough loud, in honor of Sir William Mayne, a shareholder of Governor John Wentworth in the West India trade. The place was not settled until 1829, settlers from Berlin in Massachusetts changed the name as part of their settlement. Already in the years before a first, driven by the River sawmill was built. Economy

The economy of Berlin is dominated by the large forests of the surrounding area. The timber industry provided the raw material for the paper industry, which was the most important source of income for over a hundred years of Berlin. 2006, the last major paper mill was closed. In January 2009, a part of the former mill site from the Laidlaw Energy Group, Inc. was acquired, in order to implement a project to generate energy from biomass. In addition, tourism is an important source of income especially the winter sports opportunities Presidential Range at nearby Mount Washington attracts tourists to the region.

Of the population, 64.7 % speak English, 34.3% French and 1.0 % German.
