Birrwil ( berbʊ in the local Swiss German dialect ) is a municipality in the district of Kulm in the canton of Aargau. It lies in the valley on the western shore of Lake Hallwil.

Geography

The village is situated on four elongated, narrow terraces on the steep eastern slopes of the Eichhalde ( 771 m above sea level. M. ) and the Güggelibergs ( 752 m above sea level. M. ), approximately 70 to 150 m above the lake level. Between the two hills is a small plateau which is bounded on the west by the almost circular Tätschbüel - hill ( 715 m above sea level. M. ) extends. The shore of Lake Hallwil, with the exception of the hamlet " Lakeside " largely undeveloped. On the northeast, near Alliswil, lies the hamlet Schwaderhof.

The area of the municipality is 553 hectares, of which 88 hectares are forested and built over 45 hectares. The highest point is located on 771 meters on the Eichhalde, the deepest at 449 meters on the lakeshore.

Neighboring municipalities are Leutwil the northwest, Boniswil in the north, Meisterschwanden in the east, Beinwil in the south, Reinach in the southwest and Zetzwil in the West.

History

Isolated finds are evidence of a settlement during the Neolithic period. The eastern slope of Homberg seems also to have been settled during the Roman times, as evidenced by finds of remains of walls, tile stamps and a coin of the Emperor Claudius Gothicus (about 270 AD). The village was founded by the Alemanni, which still bear witness to individual archaeological finds.
