Bobrov, Bobrovsky District, Voronezh Oblast

Bobrow (Russian Бобров ) is a town in Voronezh Oblast (Russia) with 19,738 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the Oka -Don plain about 150 km southeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Voronezh on the right bank of the Bitjug, a left tributary of the Don.

Bobrow is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The city lies on the opened on this section 1895 railway Kharkiv - Balashov - Pensa.

History

The town was the first time in 1685 as a buying office for beaver pelts ( russian бобр / bobr for " beaver ", hence the local name) mentioned. The animals were hunted in the area by the river Bitjug.

1698 was the settlement Bobrowskaja sloboda which the present name was given city status in 1779.

Culture and sights

In the city, a number of merchant houses and administrative buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries have been preserved.

In the nearby village of Sloboda (formerly Chrenowoje ) exists since 1776, founded by Count Alexei Orlov Tschesmenski state Chrenowoje stud, on which the famous Orlov trotters were first bred and are to this day. The original architectural ensemble is largely preserved and protected as a historic monument since 1960.

Economy

In Bobrow, there are companies in the food industry and the construction industry, a Musical Instrument and a furniture factory.
