Brother Where You Bound is the eighth studio album by British Pop-/Rockband Supertramp and their first without founding and long-time band member Roger Hodgson, who had left the group in 1983. It was released about 2 ½ years after the studio album ... Famous Last Words ... in May 1985 and in addition to five other songs of the top - 10 hit (USA) Cannonball. The oriented on Neoprogressive - rock record sold very well, especially in Germany and Switzerland.

Description

For the recording of the album " Brother Where You Bound", the first studio album, collected by Supertramp without Roger Hodgson, the group acted as follows: From their classic lineup, so that was shrunk from Quin - quartet, were Rick Davies ( keyboards, vocals ), John Helliwell ( saxophone), Bob Siebenberg (drums) and Dougie Thomson (bass guitar) on it. In addition, were joined by numerous guest musicians (except "No Inbetween " and " Ever Open Door " ) acted in the songs of the plate in different compositions: Brian Banks ( Programming), Cha Cha (background vocals), Gary Chang (Programming ), David Gilmour ( Pink Floyd, lead guitar ), Scott Gorham ( Thin Lizzy; supported the band already on the 1974 LP " Crime of the Century", rhythm guitar ), Anthony Marinelli (programming ), Scott Page ( supported the group previously on the 1983 - "Famous Last Words " tour ), Marty Walsh ( guitar) and Doug Wintz ( Trombone ).

All the songs of the album " Brother Where You Bound", were written by Davies, who is left founding member and sole head of Supertramp only after Hodgson's exit and sung by the lead vocal.

With the single " Cannonball" the album contains a Supertramp atypical danceable and groovy song, but also in Switzerland reached high in the charts, particularly in the United States. The song is the only member of the panel on the published in the following year best-of compilation The Autobiography of Supertramp.

Saxophone sounds lead to " Still in Love" over, according to which "no inbetween " followed.

In the following thereupon song " Better Days", which begins with bombastic intro, excerpts of speeches of the four major players in the 1984 U.S. election campaign can be heard: Geraldine Ferarro and Walter Mondale (left channel) and George HW Bush and Ronald Reagan (right channel ). The song contains an extended saxophone solo played by John Helliwell and a flute solo played by Scott Page, who acted two years later for Pink Floyd. It ends with an extended fadeout.

The epic title track, the 16 ½ -minute, extremely lyrical song " Brother Where You Bound", is to be the longest song the band's history of several parts and has many tempo changes. This includes listening to Scott Gorham ( Thin Lizzy ) on rhythm guitar and David Gilmour ( Pink Floyd ) on the main guitar and reading excerpts from the novel, 1984 ( George Orwell). Heard in the background at one point the melody of the Internationale.

The album ends with the anthemic " Ever Open Door ".

With a few songs on the recording-wise good album " Brother Where You Bound" and many Supertramp classics in their luggage, the band went on tour in 1985, but from which emerged not a live album. Nearly 2 ½ years after the record was released the album Free as a Bird.
