Built to Last is the thirteenth and final studio album by the Grateful Dead.

History

The album was recorded between 1 February and 20 October 1989, published on 31 October 1989 on Arista Records. With all the other live albums and greatest hits compilation, it is the twenty-third album of the band.

As with the album In the Dark, the band recorded songs from the album live under simulated conditions without an audience. What, however, in In the Dark led to great success in Built to Last went wrong. One hand this may be due to the long break between Reckoning and In the Dark, which this time did not have the tape of the song writing. In addition, almost half of the songs from the pen of Brent Mydland and the rest of the duo Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia or Bob Weir and John Perry Barlow come. In addition, although a base was recorded together on rhythm and song structure, but then each musician his parts alone grossed before last everything was cut of Garcia and Cutler together. Only then the songs were complete for all to hear.

Garcia later compared the records with each other and said in an interview that the recording of albums was mostly for the band comparable to pulling teeth. You would simply find a way to make it more fun. For him was particularly heavy that he is a producer and performer at the same time.

Although the album reached gold status, it was not as successful as the previous album and the next album should be all live albums by far. The title of Build to Last out to be true. It was the last studio album since the band's leader Garcia was to die in 1995.

Recorded at Club Front and at Skywalker Ranch in San Rafael, Marin County, and in Studio X in Petaluma, Sonoma County. The Skywalker Ranch was at that time quite George Lucas and was the headquarters of Lucasfilm and its subsidiaries.

Alton Kelly was again responsible for the cover, who is known for his psychedelic art. It shows the band members as they build out of the darkness with playing cards a lighted house of cards. The house was built by Garcia's daughter Anabelle and her friends. The idea for the cover comes according to his own specifications for the first time by Garcia.

Build to Last was the first Dead album, in which enhanced MIDI technology was used.

As a single, " Foolish Heart " / "We Can Run" was disengaged.

Published in 2004 a revised version of seven songs and six other Rhino Records for the box set Beyond Description ( 1973-1989 ), which were then published in 2006 as a single CD.
