Burkau

Burkau ( Upper Sorbian Porkhov ) is a place and the associated community west of Bautzen in eastern Saxony.

Geography and transport

Burkau located in the center of the district of Bautzen in a wooded area in Upper Lusatia. The town itself is located in the valley of the young convent water that originates on the western end of town. Nearby there is also the source of the Schwarze Elster in the North West Lusatian hills.

The village is located approximately 6 km north of Bischofswerda and 16 km west of the county town of Bautzen. It is located on the main highway 4 (Dresden - Görlitz). The connection points Burkau and Uhyst the divers are in the municipal area. The railway line Bischofswerda -Kamenz was demolished, the station building in Burkau remained.

History

Burkau was first mentioned in 1164, according to other sources until the year 1312. The current major settlement was established in 1994 as part of the municipal reform from the three independent municipalities Burkau, Uhyst on divers and Kleinhänchen with its districts.

The district of Neuhof belongs to the only official Sorbian settlement area.

Policy

Mayor

From the political changes from 1990 to 2012, Hans -Jürgen Richter ( FDP) Mayor of Burkau. The mayor elections on December 9, 2012 decided the CDU candidate Sebastian Hein for themselves.
