Steina

Steina is a municipality in the district of Bautzen in Saxony and a member of the administrative community Pulsnitz.

Geography

Steina is located about 30 kilometers north of Dresden, between Kamenz and Pulsnitz on the edge of the Lusatian mountain country in the conservation area Westlausitz. The site extends - as a typical row house with Waldhufen hall - more than seven kilometers and is divided into the sub- locations Weissbach, Niedersteina and Obersteina. Through the town flows the White creek, a tributary of the Haselbaches, which opens at Reichenau in the Pulsnitz. Easily recognizable Steina is his medium mountain near structure where the terrain from Sweden stone (about 420 m) is dominated.

History

1349 Steina was first mentioned. Began the colonization of the founding of the colonists villages Weissbach (originally Wysbach ) Niedersteina (originally Nedirstein ) and Obersteina (originally Oberstein ). In comparison to neighboring communities, the foundation took place relatively late. Presumably, it also meant that no separate parish was created, but all church occasions from baptism took place until the funeral in the parish Pulsnitz. Since its inception, Weissenbach, Lower and Obersteina the Pulsnitzer manor rule were liable for military service.

The autonomous communities over centuries low and Obersteina grew late 19th and early 20th century together. The new houses were given the name of heaven. 1950 Steina was with about 2150 inhabitants, the largest rural community of former district Kamenz.

Economy

For centuries, the image of the individual communities was influenced by the peasant hooves. The stony soil conditions that might probably also founded the city name, brought the farmers only low yields. The need for more arable land pushed back to the forest land which was unsuitable for agriculture. Thus, the present landscape with remnant forest was built on hilltops and swampy valleys. Southeast of the village territory remained a large closed forest, lynx castle forest. During the 18th century the trade of tape maker, which was operated primarily as a home weaving originated. To this was later the stone industry, which greatly evolved due to the increasing demand for building materials. Many remaining holes from which the granite was broken, bear witness of it yet. In 1972, the mining operations in the last quarry, the Haustein has been closed.

Attractions

Due to the scenic location, Steina offers the perfect starting point for excursions and hikes. Special destination is the Stone Sweden, whose 1898 erbauter observation tower offers an excellent panoramic view of the Upper and Western Lusatia. In winter, the flanks of the mountain offer good conditions for skiing, not least by a ski lift.

Sporting activity has in the recent history of the place a great importance. 1885, the Turnverein Obersteina was founded. 1900 saw the cycling club Niedersteina. To date, the sport of handball has earned a good name.
