Campeonato Carioca

The Campeonato Carioca is the Football Championship of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro.

Each of the 26 states and the Federal District of Brasilia runs his own football championship, a Torneio Estadual through. Some tournaments such as the Campeonato Carioca of Rio de Janeiro have a tradition that dates back to the early 20th century.

In contrast to European club football 's leading clubs at the same time take part in the national championship and the local state championships. The State Championships serve as a qualifier to the Brazilian Cup and Campeonato Brasileiro Série to D.

Mode

The Campeonato Carioca is divided in two cup competitions: the Taça Guanabara and Taça Rio.

In the Taça Guanabara be two groups of eight teams. Traditionally play here only two "big" teams ( Botafogo, Fluminense, Vasco and Flamengo ) in each group. The teams in each group play against each other once. The two group winners meet in the knockout round in the semi-finals to the two group winners of the other group. Their winners will play for the Taça Guanabara.

In the Taça Rio no new groups are formed. However, the groups did not play each other, but each eight (!) Games against the teams in the other group. The table of the group thus reflects the results against the teams in the other group represents the two group winners will meet again in the knockout round in the semi-finals to the two group winners of the other group. Their winners will play for the Taça Rio.

The grand finale of Campeonato Carioca Taca Guanabara and the winner of the Taça Rio each play a return match for the Campeao Carioca eachother. Win a team both Winners Cup, so this is automatically the Campeao Carioca and the finals omitted.

The best teams in the overall standings ( points obtained in all group matches - champions and runners are independent of the points earned be ranked on the first two places), do not participate in the concurrent Copa Libertadores will qualify for the next Brazilian Cup. The best team that participates until then not at the countrywide championships ( Campeonato Brasileiro), qualifies for the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D, an annual national qualifying tournament for the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C.
