Capraia e Limite

Capraia e Limite is a municipality with 7471 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Florence in the Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 25 km ². It is located about 20 km west of Florence on the Arno.

The districts include Capraia Fiorentina, Castra, Limite sull'Arno and Pulignano.

The neighboring municipalities are Carmignano (PO ), Empoli and Montelupo Fiorentino Vinci.

History

The first traces of human habitation in the area date back to the Bronze Age. From this time, among other ceramics were found. The area was then settled by the Etruscans, who also devoted to the production of ceramics.

Capraia Fiorentina

In the Middle Ages Capraia had special importance due to its location on the hill that dominates the Arno Valley. The place was in the sphere of Alberti di Mangona family until he got into the conflicts between Florence and Pistoia. Beginning of the 13th century built by the Florentines, the castle of Montelupo on the opposite side of the Arno, to stop the expansion of Pistoier. After the defeat of Pistoier short time later, the city reached the disputes of the Guelphs and Ghibellines. The fled to the castle of Capraia Guelphs of Florence have been under attack by the Ghibellines, who took the castle and then captured the leader of the Guelphs after unsuccessful peace negotiations and betrayal. 1250 the Guelfs returned back to the village. The name can be Capraia on the name Cerbaria (of Cervi deer or Capra: goat) lead back. From this place name was already the place of Otto III. mentioned in documents to the Bishop of Pistoia.

Limite sull'Arno

The place is much younger than Capraia and was first mentioned in 940 documents of the Counts Guidi, who also resided in Pistoia. In the 14th century the city of Pistoia was transferred to Florence. The name limit ( limit) comes from its location on the border between the two areas of Pistoia and Florence. Due to its direct location on the Arno is the place for inland navigation was important and steadily grew in population, so that the local government in 1874 by Capraia passed to limit.
