Lastra a Signa

Lastra a Signa is a municipality with 18,758 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the Province of Florence in the Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 43 km ². It is located about 12 km west of the provincial and regional capital Florence at the confluence of the Arno and Vingone. At the southwest boundary of the municipality is flowing Pesa.

The districts include Bracciatica, Brucianesi, Calcinaia, Carcheri, Ginestra Fiorentina, Inno, La Lisca, La Luna, Lecceto, Malmantile, Marliano, Ponte a Signa, Porto di Mezzo, Quattro Strade, San Martino a Gangalandi, San Romolo, Sant ' Ilario a Settimo, Stagno and Val di Rose.

The neighboring municipalities are Carmignano (PO ), Montelupo Fiorentino, Montespertoli, Scandicci and Signa.

History

The name originates in the sandstone ( lastre ), the second part of the name refers to its proximity to the neighboring community of Signa. By the end of the 13th century the place was known under the name of Lastra a Gangalandi, named after a local Ghibelline noble family. Occupied the place was probably before the 11th century as a rest stop on the Via Pisana, the ancient road between Pisa and Florence. With the expansion of the Republic of Florence in the 12th century it fell into their sphere of influence, there were built to this day important Arno bridges and in 1326 the town walls planned, was to be finished until the end of the century and was intended as Vorverteidigungsposten for Florence.
