Cercado Province (Beni)

Cercado is a province in the eastern part of the Bolivian department of Beni.

Location

The province is one of eight provinces in the department of Beni. It is bounded on the northwest by the province Yacuma, on the west by the province Moxos, on the south by the province Marbán, on the southeast by the Department of Santa Cruz, in the north- east by the province Iténez, and to the north by the province Mamoré.

The province extends approximately between 14 ° 00 ' and 15 ° 00' south latitude and 63 ° 32 ' and 65 ° 05 ' west longitude, their extent from west to east is 190 km, from north to south 140 km.

Population

The population of the province of Cercado has risen in the past two decades by more than two-thirds:

43.3 percent of the population are younger than 15 years. The literacy rate in the province is 89.8 percent.

99.1 percent of the population speaking Spanish, 4.3 percent Quechua, Aymara 2.8 percent, and 2.4 percent other indigenous languages. (1992)

22.8 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 25.6 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

84.1 percent of the population are Catholics, 12.4 percent are Protestant (1992).

Structure

The Cercado Province is divided into two municipios ( counties ):

  • The municipality of Trinidad ( 1774 km ²) in the southern part of the province - 97,625 inhabitants ( 2010) - 55.0 inhabitants / km ²
  • The municipality of San Javier ( 9937 km ²) in the central and northern part of the province - 3,103 inhabitants - 0.3 inhabitants / km ²
