Chekalin

Chekalin (Russian Чекалин ), formerly Lichwin ( Лихвин ) is a small town in Rajon Kirejewsk the Tula Oblast in Russia. The city is situated on the left bank of the Oka.

The population is 994 (as of October 14, 2010 ). This Chekalin is, making it the smallest city in Russia.

History

The city was founded in 1565 under the name Lichwin.

During World War II the city was occupied from October 22 to December 27, 1941 by the German Wehrmacht. In 1944, the renaming of Lichwin Chekalin in honor of the Soviet partisans Alexander Chekalin, who was hanged here on 6 November 1941 at the age of 16.
