Chong Kah Kiat

Chong Kah Kiat Tan Sri ( born June 2, 1948 in Kudat, Sabah ) is a Malaysian politician and was the 13th Prime Minister of the State of Sabah. He followed in 2001 Osu Sukam after and was replaced by Musa Aman 2003. Chong, a Hakka, was also the former president of the Liberal Party Democratic Party ( LDP).

Life

Chong Kah Kiat (Chinese:章 家 杰) was born on 2 June 1948 in Kudat, British North Borneo. He is a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, where he graduated in 1975 with a Masters in Law ( LLM).

Political career

Chong won in 1981 as a candidate for the electoral district of Kudat and moved for a BERJAYA into the state parliament. The following year he was appointed Assistant Minister of the Prime Minister. He retained the post until April 1985, when he had to vacate the place for Datuk Wong Phin Chung Parti Bersatu Sabah by the party (PBS).

In March 1987 he became a member of the supreme body of the party, the Supreme Council. When he realized that he lost influence, he left the party.

Chong founded in 1989 with some Chinese leaders the LDP in 1989 and took over for an interim period to function as Secretary General. Eventually he became party leader in 1991. At the elections to the state parliament in 1994, he did not present himself, but a year later he was appointed as a Senator in the Dewan Negara, the Senate of the Malaysian Parliament. He was then Minister in the Cabinet of the Malaysian Prime Minister. He left this post in March 1999 to participate as a candidate for the constituency in the elections Kudat in Sabah where he regained his traditional stronghold Kudat and Minister of Tourism, Environment, Science and Technology was.

Chong was founded in 2001, was sworn in by the in 1994 by Mahathir bin Mohamad introduced rotation principle as the 13th Prime Minister of Sabah.

As Musa Aman replaced him in 2003, Chong was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and also retained its responsibility for the tourism department, culture and environment. The rotation principle was abolished in the sequence and from there to the post of prime minister from the party United Malays National Organization was occupied. Chong joined in April 2007 " for reasons of principle " by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister back.
