CityLink is a system of toll freeways in Melbourne in the south of the Australian state of Victoria. The company Transurban was commissioned to build two efficient road connections to the city center of Melbourne and operate the existing freeways connect, so that a rapid transit downtown is possible. These are the Southern Link, which connects the Monash Freeway at Kooyong with the West Gate Freeway in South Melbourne and the Western Link, which connects the Tullamarine Freeway in Essendon with the West Gate Freeway in Port Melbourne.

History

For the first time the southern and the western bypass of the city center in Melbourne Transportation mentioned plan in 1969. The plan recommended to reserve corridors and appropriate funds for downtown workarounds. Together with the Eastern Freeway were the two inner city by-passes the few freeways of the plan that were not later discarded.

The intention to build City Link, was first announced in May 1992 and officially endorsed by the state government in mid-1994. The order was the overall financial volume of the project at AU $ 1995 at Transurban, a consortium of Australian Transfield Services and the Japanese Obayashi Gumi, vergeben.1996 estimated 1.8 billion and the operating agreement will expire in 2035.

CityLink was built between 1996-2000 and had an eight times larger volume than other jades road project in Melbourne at that time. Manually operated toll booths were deemed impractical and would have the traffic so far delayed that the advantage of the new highways would be virtually eliminated. In 1992 it was decided to provide an electronic toll collection, although at that time there were hardly any practical experience with such a system. The first section was opened to traffic in August 1999 and the toll collection began on January 3, 2000, even before completion of the project on 28 December 2000.

The extension of Exhibition Street was not part of the original project, whose purpose it was to direct traffic around the city center around. According to an agreement dated April 1998 Transurban should operate the roads and collect tolls from users, where the streets in October 1999 should be opened.

Existing freeways

Previously, there were four different freeways in the city center:

  • Monash Freeway ( formerly South Eastern Freeway, South Eastern Arterial Road and Mulgrave Freeway on various sections ). It starts about 2 km southeast of the city and connects with the Western Melbourne Gippsland
  • M2 / Tullamarine Freeway, which began and connects Melbourne with his Airport 5 km northwest of the City. It binds with the Calder Freeway which connects Melbourne with Bendigo.
  • West Gate Freeway ( formerly Lower Yarra Freeway), which, immediately southwest of the city began in Port Melbourne, the Yarra River crossing on the West Gate Bridge and connects to the Princes Freeway and Western Ring Road.
  • M3 Eastern Freeway, the Collingwood '' connects '' with the eastern and northeastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Citylink included the widening and upgrading of inner-city sections of the Tullamarine Freeway and the Monash Freeway. For these sections also developed tolls were collected, which caused a lot of criticism of the users.

New freeways

Western Link

The built in high altitude Western Link extends the Tullamarine Freeway to 5 km south to the West Gate Freeway in Port Melbourne. It includes a large new bridge over the Yarra River, the Bolte Bridge, which was named after the former Prime Minister of Victoria, Henry Bolte ( 1908-1990 ). In Flemington, where the road leads past some residential towers, he has a tubular acoustic cover. Just north of acoustic cover was a large sculpture called, ' Melbourne International Gateway '' set, which consists of a gigantic, yellow bar across the street ( the people called him Cheese Stick (German: Cheese stick ) ) and a number of smaller red bars next to the road ( the people she called zipper or rack of lamb (English: zipper or lamb ) ) exists. Also, the Tullamarine Freeway between Bell Street and Flemington Road was widened by a through lane in each direction.

This stretch was designated in 1969 as a plan of Freeway Corridor F14 in Melbourne Transportation.

Southern Link

The underground Southern Link connects the ends of the Monash Freeway and West Gate Freeway to form a continuous urban highway. The road consists of the Burnley Tunnel and the Domain tunnel in opposite directions, the result under the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Yarra River through. The road also includes a connection from the Monash Freeway to the city center via a bridge in the extension of Exhibition Street, which leads from the nearby railway line.

This stretch was designated in 1969 as a plan of Freeway Corridor F9 in Melbourne Transportation.
