Clint Houston
Joseph Clinton " Clint " Houston (* June 24, 1946 in New Orleans, Louisiana, † June 6, 2000 in New York ) was an American bassist and composer of modern jazz.
Life and work
Houston, who comes from a musical family, grew up in Washington DC and from 1953 in New York City, where he had first piano lessons, before moving to bass in high school. He has performed with his own band and played with his friends George Cables, Lenny White and Charles Sullivan and Billy Cobham in jam sessions before he first art and architecture and then studied music at Queens College. From 1964 to 1966 he took private lessons with Ron Carter. Then he was with Cables and White to house band at Slug 's Saloon and performed with musicians such as Julian Priester, Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Owens, Joe Newman and Freddie Hubbard.
From 1969 he played with Nina Simone and Roy Haynes and formed with Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach the formation FreeLife Communications before joining the band of Roy Ayers in 1971. With this he played at the Montreux Jazz Festival and was involved in the recording of the album Red, Green and Black. Short term he lived in Germany, where he was engaged in 1972 Kurt Edelhagen.
Then he played until 1975 when Charles Tolliver, with whom he toured in Japan, before he worked until 1977 in California, the group of Stan Getz belonged ( "The Best of Both Worlds " ) and also with Kai Winding. In 1977 he returned to New York, where he played until 1979 when Woody Shaw ( " Sunshowers "), but also with Joanne Brackeen, which he remained connected until 1986.
From 1989 to Houston worked for several years with Louis Hayes, but also performed with McCoy Tyner and George Coleman. In addition, he recorded with Onaje Allan Gumbs, Pepper Adams, Slide Hampton, Roland Hanna, Gary Bartz, John Hicks, Hamiet Bluiett, John Stubblefield, Frank Foster, John Scofield and many others.
