CR Vasco da Gama

Vasco da Gama, Club de Regatas officially Vasco da Gama, often just called Vasco, is one of the most successful football club from the city of Rio de Janeiro.

The Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama ( " rowing club Vasco da Gama " ) was incorporated on August 21, 1898 by Portuguese immigrants. Rowing at the time was the most popular sport in Rio de Janeiro. Inspired by the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the sea route from Europe to India by Vasco da Gama, the founders decided to name the club after the Portuguese navigator.

The football department was created on 5 November 1915. The rivals are Fluminense, Botafogo and Flamengo, Flamengo being to the greatest rivalry.

At the end of the 2008 season the club was relegated for the first time in league history in the top league from to return a year later than the First Place Série B back into the Series A. 2013 was again the descent into the Série B.

The sports club CR Vasco da Gama is active in many sports in addition to football, including dates of basketball player Nene from the club. The Olympic qualification for the 2004 men's water polo was held in the outdoor swimming pool located right on the stadium of the club.

Stadium

The home stadium of Vasco is on April 27 opened in 1927 São Januário with a capacity of 31,000 seats. Some games are but discharged ( 73 531 spectators ) in the Maracanã Stadium.
