Daniel Sheldon Norton

Daniel Sheldon Norton ( born April 12, 1829 in Mount Vernon, Ohio; † July 13, 1870 in Washington DC) was an American politician who represented the state of Minnesota in the U.S. Senate.

Life

Early life

Daniel Norton enjoyed a good education at Kenyon College in Gambier ( Ohio), and served as a young man, 1846-1848, as an infantryman in the Mexican-American War. Upon his return to Ohio Norton studied law and gained 1850-1851 hands-on experience including in California and Nicaragua. In 1852 he was admitted to the Bar Association. In the same year he moved to Minnesota, where he worked in St. Paul and from 1856 Winona worked as a lawyer.

Political career

1857 Norton, who was a member of the Republican Party, was elected to the House of Representatives from Minnesota, where he held a seat until 1860. He also sat from 1861 to 1864 in the Minnesota Senate.

At the outbreak of the Civil War he hit himself on the side of the northern states and ran successfully in 1864 for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Norton, who took office on March 4, 1865, it should hold only five years. In this capacity, he represented Minnesota in 1866 at the National Convention in Philadelphia.

He died in July 1870 at the age of only 41 years.
