Ozora P. Stearns

Ozora Pierson Stearns ( born January 15, 1831 in De Kalb, New York, † June 2, 1896 in Pacific Beach, California ) was an American politician.

Stearns, who was born 1831 in De Kalb in St. Lawrence County, New York, in 1833 moved with his parents to Ohio. The family settled in Lake County. Stearns studied at the University of Michigan and later at the law department of the university. In 1860 he was taken there after his degree in the legal profession and practiced in Rochester (Minnesota). 1866 to 1868 he held the office of mayor of the city.

January 18, 1871 Stearns was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacant seat of the newly deceased in July 1870 Daniel Sheldon Norton. In the period between Norton's death and the election of a new Senator William Windom had exercised the mandate. Stearns took over from Windom and remained from January 23 to March 3, 1871 in Congress. He renounced his candidacy for another term and Windom was again Senator. 1872 Stearns moved to Duluth, where he was again working as a lawyer. From 1874 to 1895 he was a judge in the Eleventh Judicial District of Minnesota.

Stearns died in 1896 in Pacific Beach. His remains were cremated in Los Angeles; his ashes were interred at Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth.
