DSM (company)

The Dutch company Koninklijke DSM NV is an international chemical group headquartered in Heerlen, Netherlands.

DSM (Dutch State Mines / De State Mijnen ) was founded in 1902 as a mining company. Over the years, the company was also active in the chemical sector. In the 60s of the 20th century, the Dutch government took the decision to close all state-owned coal mines. In 1975, the last state-owned mine was closed. The government promoted the chemical sites in order to create jobs for the unemployed miners.

Today, the company produces:

  • Industrial chemicals
  • Drugs ( antibiotics, etc. )
  • Dietary supplements ( vitamins, etc. )

The company has nearly 24,000 employees, of which 71 % outside the Netherlands. It has locations in 52 countries around the world. DSM has a total of 270 production sites and offices worldwide and annual sales of approximately 9.1 billion Euro annually (2008) with a profit of 577 million euros.

1989 DSM was privatized. In 2002 the company sold its oil department at the Saudi Arabian company SABIC. Likewise, it acquired the business sector dietary supplements and additives from Hoffmann- La Roche.
