Duke of Hamilton

Duke of Hamilton is a title in the Peerage of Scotland, created in 1643. It is the oldest dukedom in that Peerage (up to the Duchy of Rothesay ), whereby the title holder of the Premier Peer of Scotland and at the same time head of the Clan Hamilton and the Clan Douglas. The title, the town of Hamilton in Lanarkshire and many other places in the world are named after the Hamilton family members. The paternal strain range of the ducal family "Hamilton" changed as a result of marriage ( 1656) the daughter of the last Duke of Hamilton to William Douglas. Since after the death of the last Duke of Douglas, the Douglas line had no heirs, left, except the title Duke of Douglas, all of its subsidiary title of the Duke of Hamilton ( the father's side since 1658 descended from the Douglas ) and the family name was changed to " Douglas Hamilton ". Since 1711 the Duke of Hamilton and Cathedral of Brandon exist as a community in the Peerage of Great Britain, which also changed the title of the Duke in Duke of Hamilton and Brandon.
