dyne:bolic

Dyne: bolic (also simply dynebolic ) is one consisting exclusively of free software, Linux live CD distribution with a focus on multimedia. It was created specifically for media activists and artists and therefore contains a variety of programs for editing, converting and streaming audio and film works.

Live CD

Dyne: bolic is designed to be as so-called live CD booted and used directly from the CD. Therefore no installed software is needed and therefore no hard drive or similar installation media to the computer. Similar to other live CDs detects and configures them therefore on system startup the existing hardware including peripherals, automatically. The Linux kernel used is optimized for low latency and high speed in order to specifically adapt to the requirements for sound and film production.

Dyne: bolic, however, is not a modified version of other known live CDs such as Knoppix and uses since version 2.4 Xfce as the default desktop based on the X.Org server. Previously, it was used instead of Xfce GNU Window Maker. The minimum system requirements are a Pentium PC MMX class ( i586 ) and 64 MB of memory is relatively low.

The current stable version of dyne: bolic is version 2.5, which is based on the 2.6 series of the Linux kernel ( 2.6.18 ). The version 1.4.1 is available with a 2.4 kernel for use on the Xbox games console.

Installation

The permanent installation of dyne: bolic is merely the " dyne " folder called from the CD to a suitably formatted hard disk partition to copy ( " docking "). This file system is automatically detected and booted from the CD at startup. In addition, however, it is also possible to install a boot loader or the existing to modify so that dyne: bolic can also be started directly without the CD. dyne: bolic can in addition also save user settings as a normal Linux distribution permanently ( " nesting "). Since version 2.4 can also be encrypted to protect the privacy of this " nest ".

By installing additional modules, such as development tools or office applications, the system can be expanded. These modules are stored in the " modules" folder of the system and automatically integrated during system startup.

Program scope

Dyne: bolic is geared towards the needs of media activists and artists to be a useful tool for creating multimedia content. Using special recording, editing, converting and streaming programs, it enables the creation and dissemination of sound and film works. It includes XMMS for playing music, the tracker program SoundTracker, the MPEG-4 audio and video streaming server Mp4Live, the VJ program FreeJ, virtual DJ Turntable TerminatorX, the Tonspureditor Audacity, Pure Data, Cinelerra, the video editing software Jahshaka, Blender for 3D animation, GIMP " the " open source graphics program that SVG vector graphics program Inkscape and the multi-track recording software Ardour.

Besides offering dyne: bolic and word processors such as AbiWord, Mozilla web browser, Sylpheed for email, instant messenger XChat, with Bluefish HTML editor, Lopster for file sharing and commonly used desktop utility programs, such as zsh as the default shell.

Newer dyne: bolic versions contain numerous based on the optimized low latency audio Framework JACK Audio Connection Kit programs for music editing. With openMosix, which is not integrated in the 2.x series into the kernel, will automatically switch between with dyne: bolic booted computers set up a computer cluster. So it is possible, for example, with several older computers to achieve a remarkable speed of operation.

Development

Since version 2.0, the developers follow the approach dyne: bolic in all aspects to make it a " Live Distribution ." Most live CD distributions are intended for demonstration purposes only; to try out new versions, you have to wait for these to a new CD version. dyne: bolic 2 consists of a base system that will be adaptable with additional modules easily to your needs.

The main improvements over the version 1.x branch are:

  • No exclusive default root account anymore, but real multi-user environments, such as GNU / Linux and Unix in general practice
  • Inclusion of developer tools including a compiler, to re-create the system partially or fully self (completely possible in version 2.3)
  • Greater amount of possible user settings
  • Modular construction for extensions

The main author and person in charge of dyne: bolic Denis " Jaromil " Rojo has even written some of the tools included in the distribution as MusE, hasciicam and FreeJ.
