Étupes

Étupes is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté. It is the capital of the canton in the arrondissement of Montbéliard Étupes.

Geography

Étupes is located at 330 m, about 5 km east of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in the east of the basin of Montbeliard, on the southern edge of the wide valley at the confluence of the creek and Allan Savoureuse charm, at the northern foot of the far northern Jura Mountains with the Plateau de Caux.

The area of ​​9.87 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the basin of Montbéliard on the southern edge of the Burgundian Gate ( trouée de Belfort ). The northern part of the area occupied by the approximately two -mile-wide valley of Allan, which is on average 320 m. In this valley are also the waterways of the Rhine- Rhone canal and the diversion of the Canal de la Haute -Saône.

The southern part of the municipality comprises the valley system of the village stream charm. This originates in the area of the village, but has in its catchment area several dry valleys, which are sunk in broad depressions in the surrounding plateau. Almost the whole plateau of the Caux, which forms the northern border of the Jura is, with forest existed ( Fahy and Bois du Bois des Écouteaux ). With 406 meters, the highest elevation of Étupes is achieved in the Bois du Fahy.

Neighboring communities of Étupes are Vieux- Charmont, Brognard and Allenjoie in the north, Fesches -le- Châtel and Dampierre -les -Bois in the east, Dasle, Audi Court and Taillecourt in the south and Exincourt and Sochaux in the West.

History

Some findings indicate that the municipality of Étupes was already inhabited during the Roman period. The first mention was made in 1294 under the name Esteupes. Over time, the spelling on Estoupe ( 1448 ), Estupes ( 1481 ) and Estupe ( 1738) transformed to the present Étupes. In the Middle Ages Étupes belonged to the rule Cusance - Belvoir, who came to the Counts of Montbéliard in the 16th century. This led in 1541 the Reformation. With the annexation of the county of Montbéliard Étupes reached 1793 final in French hands. Built in 1770 by the Counts three-winged castle later came into state ownership. It was demolished in 1801 to eliminate a symbol of the Ancien Régime.

Unlike many towns of the Pays de Montbéliard Étupes remained in the 19th century, despite its proximity to the Peugeot factories in Sochaux agricultural. Industrialization began only during the 20th century. Since the 1970s the industrial and commercial zone Technoland arose. Today Étupes part of the community association Communauté d' Agglomà du Pays de Montbéliard.

Attractions

The church of Saint Paul was built in the late 16th century after the invasion of the Guises and 1747 again increased. The ship was extensively rebuilt in the 19th century.

Population

With 3557 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Étupes belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the department of Doubs. After the population had shown in the first half of the 20th century, relatively small fluctuations, continued from about 1955, a significant population increase: increased fivefold within little more than ten years, the number of inhabitants. With approximately 5300 inhabitants mid-1970s, the previous high was reached. The economic crisis and the restructuring of the industry in the Pays de Montbéliard in the period 1975-1990 led to many workers and families moved away and the population declined sharply. The nearest links to the A36 motorway, which runs through the municipality, is located at a distance of about 2 km. Further road links exist with Taillecourt, Dasle and Fesches -le- Châtel. With the city of Montbéliard Étupes is connected by a bus.
