Geography

Fairmont is located near the border with Iowa in southern Minnesota. The city was built to the northeast of a chain of five lakes ( Lake George, Lake Sisseton, Budd Lake, Hall Lake and Amber Lake ). According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of ​​Fairmont is 42.8 square miles, of which 5.1 square miles of water.

History

Originally the territory of today's Fairmont was inhabited by the Winnebago Indians. First white explorers in the region were John C. Fremont and the Frenchman Joseph N. Nicollet in June 1838.

The first permanent settlement was built by Elisha Banks Hall and William H. Budd. They built their houses on the surrounding lakes, which still bear their names. According to the records of Budd lived in January 1857 a total of 52 residents in Fairmont. The original name of the city was Fairmount, but was later changed to Fairmont.

With the beginning of the Sioux uprising in 1862, many residents fled eastward to safer areas.
