Farmington is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The city is located in the Metro Detroit and had in 2000 10.423 inhabitants.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a land area of 6.9 km2.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 10423 residents in the city in 4825 households. The population density was 1507 people per km2.

In the households 24.4 % have children under the age of 18 lived, 47.7 % were married. 38.5 % of households were single-person households. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.86.

20 % of the population were under 18, 5.3 % from 18 to 24, 32.5 % between 25 and 44 years, 21.7% between 45 and 64 years and 20.5 % were 65 years and older. For every 100 females population were 89.3 males.

The average household income was 56 442 U.S. dollars.

Management

Farmington has a council with a mayor and four council members. The council appoints a City Manager, who carries out the day to day business.

Together with Farmington Hills Farmington provides a representative in the state government of Michigan.

In December 2006, Farmington Hills has conducted a feasibility study for the merger with Farmington.

In addition to the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press, the city has two of its own publications, the Farmington Farmington Observer and Gazette, which is published weekly.
