FIFA U-17 World Cup

The FIFA U- 17 World Cup, or only briefly U17 World Cup (English: FIFA U -17 World Cup) called, is a football tournament for young males under 17 years, organized by the world football governing body FIFA.

The first U -17 World Cup was held in China in 1985. The Nigerian national football team won the tournament. It is held every two years since then, the age limit was raised in 1991 from 16 to 17.

World champion of the U -17 are Brazil and Nigeria, each with three victories. A second African football nation was also very successful: Ghana won the tournament twice.

The eleventh FIFA U -17 World Championship took place in Peru in 2005. 16 teams competed for the world title. The winner was the first time Mexico with a 3-0 victory over Brazil. This tournament was the first international competition in which FIFA began a microchip in the ball. The stages had to be equipped with a special technique in order to receive the signal. The U -17 World Cup was with respect to this technical innovation as a dress rehearsal for the FIFA World Cup 2006, in which this chip in the ball, which indicates whether the ball has crossed the goal line or not, should be introduced. Since the system does not yet worked flawlessly, FIFA rejected the plan and postponed the introduction.

In the U -17 World Cup 2007 in South Korea for the first time took part in 24 teams. From Europe, the six best teams in the U-17 Football Championship qualifying in the early summer of the same year.

The last U -17 World Cup was on 18 June - performed July 10, 2011 in Mexico and won by the host: the Mexican U-17 players defeated in the final of the team Uruguay 2-0.

At the end of each U- 17 World Cup, several awards will be awarded to the best players and fairest team. Currently there are four different awards:

  • The Adidas Golden Ball for best player
  • The Adidas Golden Shoe for top scorer
  • The Adidas Golden Glove for the Best Goalkeeper
  • The FIFA Fair Play Award for the fairest team
