Franklin Wheeler Mondell

Franklin Wheeler Mondell ( born November 6, 1860 in St. Louis, Missouri; † August 6, 1939 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician.

Life and work

Mondell grew up in Iowa in Dickinson County. In 1887, he moved to Wyoming Territory and settled in Newcastle, a city at the establishment of which he was involved. 1888 Mondell was elected mayor of Newcastle and held that post until 1895. As Wyoming 1890, a state of the United States was, Mondell was elected as a Republican in the first Senate of the State. After his re-election he was in 1892 in the next legislative session Senate President.

Two years later he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and represented his state there from March 4, 1895 until March 3, 1897 and again on 4 March 1899 to 3 March 1923. During the 66th and the 67th Congress he was Majority Leader in the House of Representatives. In 1922, he not applied for re-election but instead ran for a seat in the U.S. Senate. However, he was defeated by Democratic incumbent John B. Kendrick.

After retiring from Congress Mondell was appointed in 1923 as Director of the War Finance Corporation and held that office until his resignation in Juli 1925. Besides he studied law and practiced after his admission to the bar in Washington. As a Republican, Mondell was several times a delegate to the Republican National Convention, namely 1892, 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912 and most recently in 1924. He died in 1939 in Washington, and was interred in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.
